In this workshop each student will take their own deer hide through all of the necessary stages of tanning and go home with a completed soft deer hide, ready for your next leather project. Tanning leather using oils and fats has been done by cultures all around the world for thousands of years. This kind of tanning results in the classic “Buckskin” leather that is great for making clothing.

Brains have water soluble oils that help to soften a hard, rawhide skin into a soft, cotton-like texture. Brain-tanning is basically exactly what it sounds like: it is the process of transforming an animal skin into leather using brains. In our DIY leather tanning course we use a traditional method of hide-tanning called “brain-tanning”. With Rabbits, the size makes it a quick day long introduction into this ancient art. This is generally a longer class for hides like Deer. Allow the skins to soak for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. To accomplish this, simply add one tablespoon of baking soda to every gallon of water it takes to cover the skin.

Neutralizing brings the PH of the skins up into this range. In one day you will brain, soften, and smoke your rabbit skin. The ideal PH for a hide to tan well is between 4, and 7. Learn the basics of brain-tanning by starting small: a rabbit hide. We offer a few different styles, some basic, some more advanced and difficult. There are many different methods of tanning used all around the word, each with their own slightly different kind of leather. Plain salt without iodine from the store works well, and is about a dollar for a decent-sized tub. Make sure the salt doesn’t have iodine in it, as this will alter your results. Please note that adding the salt helps to prevent acid swell. Take some non-iodized salt and coat the fleshy part of the hides thoroughly. Ready to be either mounted or frozen the next day. Drip drain and place hide in a plastic bag at room temperature to sweat overnight. Soak hide for approximately 1 hour in salt water solution. Hide-tanning is the process of transforming animal skins into leather. To Rehydrate Dry Tan hides for mounting use 4 ounces of salt per gallon of luke warm water.
